Man Utd coaches due in Uganda today

Manchester United youth coach John Shields and academy director Tony Whelan are expected in the country today to conduct a three-day youth soccer course.

Shields is also the chief executive officer of United’s foundation.

The two English coaches are in the country at the invitation of Proline Soccer Academy (PSA), who struck an agreement in April with English champions Manchester United for them to send youth coaches to Uganda to train local coaches from various academies in the country.

The clinic for the academy coaches in Uganda is a way to lift the standard of youth football in the country.

“The immense talent in Uganda is being systematically drowned by lack of modern coaching methods and styles, that is why you find brilliant young players in Uganda winning the Under-10, Under-12, Under-14 Gothia and Tivoli tournaments at a canter and later finding these same players burnt out or fighting stalled careers at age 22,” Mujib Kasule, director of PSA told the press.

The participants will be handed certificates at the closing ceremony on Sunday afternoon at the Lugogo indoor stadium which will be presided over by the Sports Minister, Charles Bakkabulindi.

The clinic is sponsored by MTN.
