Police handed notice to vacate Namboole Stadium

Sports Minister Charles Bakkabulindi has said Special Police Constables (SPCs) must vacate Mandela National Stadium, Namboole before Uganda Cranes take on Benin Squirrels in a must-win Africa Nations Cup qualifier on October 12.

Bakkabulindi was reacting to reports that the SPCs had ravaged facilities at the national stadium. “I acted so fast after getting the reports. I visited Namboole and realised that some facilities were not in good shape,” Bakkabulindi said while officiating at a ceremony that saw MTN Foundation donate Shs700m to renovate Lugogo Indoor Stadium.

“When I witnessed what was going on, I called Kale Kayihura (Inspector General of Police) and requested him to relocate his people before the Cranes match,” Bakkabulindi added.

The stadium management entered an understanding with Police to accommodate the SPCs meant to strengthen security during last year’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (Chogm). Though the summit was hosted last November, the first batch of SPCs only vacated on August 20.

The remaining constables reside in the gym and have been accused of dismantling facilities including toilets and the fence.

The minister promised to repair the facilities. “Count on me. Everything will be back to order very soon. Soccer fans will watch the Cranes match in a very conducive environment, ” he said. The minister also promised to attract partners to help government refurbish all stadiums across the country.
