Chaos over inaugural FUFA awards

AN ugly fight is brewing between Anfield Communications and soccer governing body FUFA over the handling of money generated for the Awards Night.

The controversy surrounding the inaugural FUFA Awards Night flared when the federation and Anfield Communications, the firm contracted to manage the event, disagreed on who should handle the funds generated for the occasion due to be held in Kampala on September 20.

The disagreement follows the sh360m sponsorship deal that Anfield secured for the function from Nile Breweries on Tuesday.

Anfield CEO Aldrine Nsubuga had earlier on secured funding for the event from National Insurance Corporation, National Social Security Fund, Coca Cola, Lion Assurance and Radio Two. All along FUFA has been unbothered until Anfield got sh360m from Nile Breweries.

While Anfield signed a 3-year deal with Nile Breweries and although they are yet to receive any cash, FUFA wants all the money raised to be deposited on its bank account and not that of Anfield.

“Nile Breweries was very clever. The dummy cheque they presented indicated FUFA and not Anfield. We commend Anfield for creativity. But we cannot entrust federation money with an individual. We shall give the money to Anfield in bits,” FUFA publicist Rogers Mulindwa said at their weekly press conference at Mengo yesterday.

But Nsubuga said how the money will be spent over the three years is the responsibility of his company.

“Nobody will tell Nile Breweries how to dispense the money. There is no third party known anywhere in the awards sponsorship deal,” Nsubuga explained.
